2019 Abu Dhabi Matchplay Golf Championship

Now in its 4th year the Abu Dhabi Matchplay Championship is a season-long knockout competition open to amateur golfers across England, Scotland and Wales.

This fantastic opportunity to compete in the individual and pairs competitions is delivered in partnership with Golf in Abu Dhabi (Yas Links, Saadiyat Beach & Golf Club, Abu Dhabi National) Etihad Airways and Rotana Hotels.

The competition provides those qualifying through to the grand finals a 5* experience of golf in Abu Dhabi, Home to part of the European Tour’s Desert Swing trilogy of events, and with the final round played on the magnificent Abu Dhabi National Golf Club, amateur golfers in the UK really do have the chance to follow in the footsteps of the pro’s.

The golf doesn’t stop there with the extensive finals covering 6 days of expenses paid finals and 3 rounds of competition at Abu Dhabis two other world championship courses*. Yas Links Golf Club recognised as possibly the best links course outside of the UK and Saadiyat Golf Club (Home of the Gary Player Invitational) make up the impressive array of golf courses that will determine the Abu Dhabi Amateur Matchplay champions.

The competition format is a match-play knock-out taking place between June 2019 and March 2020, with its unique 36 hole home and away 1st round structure the competition provides a fantastic opportunity for amateur golfers to experience and compete in a truly professional experience.

The event is organised by Square Peg Events.

Qualifying Rounds - July 2019 to March 2020

Qualifying rounds will take place between June and March with the winners invited to national finals.

With approximately four weeks to play each match.

The first round takes place on a ‘home and away’ basis over 36 holes. A draw for home advantage in subsequent rounds is made.

Early rounds are drawn in regions to minimize travelling distances, however, the further you progress the further you may need to travel if drawn away.

National Final - April 2020

The pairs and individuals qualifying through to the national finals will be invited to one of 2 regional finals with the winners of each match qualifying through to the International Grand Finals In Abu Dhabi.

The regional finals will be played in matchplay format. The national finals will be spit into 2 regions, North & South.

Each region will host its own national finals matches with the winners booking their seats on the plane to the Grand Finals.

Venues – TBC – 2 venues, one each in the North & South of the country - 2019 Competition – WC Monday 6th April 2020.

Grand Finals - May 2020

The players winning through to the Grand Finals are in for a real treat.

The direct flight from the UK to the United Arab Emirates will see the finalists check in to the stunning 4* Rotana Yas Links Hotel, situated on Yas Island, just a sand wedge away from the impressive F1 circuit and Yas Links Golf Club, the hotel is perfectly situated to enjoy all things golf and Abu Dhabi.

The Grand Finals will be played on 3 of Abu Dhabi’s world renowned Championship golf courses.

The Finals format will see each of the finalists playing against each other in a mini league matchplay format over 3 separate days. The winners of each match will receive 2 points with 1 point being awarded if the match is all square after 18 holes. The pair / individual with the most points following the 3 matches will be crowned Abu Dhabi Matchplay Champions. Should points be tied after the 3 matches then winning margins will be used to determine final standings.

To kick things off following the briefing the finalists will be invited to take part in a welcome floodlit Par 3 challenge a Yas Links. This social evening will give an opportunity to perfect the iron play and get a feel for the greens in Abu Dhabi.
