Golf Course Overview

Worplesdon Golf Club, founded in 1908, completes the celebrated trio of "three Ws" with Woking and West Hill. The course was laid out by J.F. Abercromby, with greens and bunkers constructed by two-time Open Champion Willie Park Jr. Subsequent contributions came from Arthur Croome (post-WWI changes to short holes) and Roger Wethered (the redesigned 8th hole of 1935), with later revisions by Harry Colt. A multi-year renovation by Lobb & Partners was completed in 2021, reinstalling heather on bunkers and restoring the iconic necklace/horseshoe bunker on the par-3 13th. The course plays to a par of 71 over approximately 6,481 yards on Bagshot sand with excellent year-round drainage. The signature par-3 10th requires a tee-to-green carry over Bridley Pond (the only significant water hazard), especially spectacular when surrounding rhododendrons are in bloom.

Past captains include Arthur Balfour (UK Prime Minister 1902-05, captain for the first two years from 1908) and HRH The Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in 1933. Worplesdon hosts the prestigious Worplesdon Mixed Foursomes, established in 1921 — Joyce Wethered (Lady Heathcoat Amory, Lady Captain 1922 and President 1963-97) won it eight times with seven different partners. Visitors are welcomed on weekdays (no outside visitors on weekends), with two-ball play preferred. Located on Heath House Road off the A322 Bagshot/Guildford Road, six miles each from Bagshot (M3) and Guildford (A3).
