 Golf Course Overview

Weston-super-Mare Golf Club was established in 1892 and has been a long-standing fixture on the UK golf circuit for well over a century. The original nine-hole links was laid out by the prolific Victorian architect Tom Dunn, who also designed courses at Woking, Sheringham and Royal Wimbledon, with the course extended to 18 holes four years later. In 1922 Alister MacKenzie — later the designer of Augusta National — was commissioned to alter and modify the layout, producing the course still played today. The par-70, 6,245-yard links sits at the southern end of Weston Bay with views across the Bristol Channel past Brean Down, Steep Holm and Flat Holm to Cardiff. Five beautifully bunkered par-3s and three par-5s punctuate a layout whose signature is the 458-yard par-4 15th "Road Hole" — a blind tee shot with out-of-bounds right, echoing the 17th at the Old Course at St Andrews.

The clubhouse dates to 1905 and retains some of its original features, with a major refurbishment of the bar and dining facilities in 2007 creating a comfortable setting for meals, real ales and private functions. Head PGA Professional Ben Lock offers lessons to golfers of all levels, and the pro shop includes a club repair facility. Thanks to its sandy soil and excellent drainage, the course is rarely closed and is played off real tees all year round. Visitors are welcomed weekdays and after 14:00 at weekends, with societies, events and tour groups catered for throughout the year.

Weston-super-Mare

★★★ ★ ★
3.5/5

"Dating back to 1892 Weston-super-Mare is a historic club with a true links course considered by many as one of the best in the South West."

The easy walking course has many subtleties and was designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the man who helped shape Augusta National.
