Golf Course Overview
West Cornwall Golf Club, founded in 1889 by Reverend Tyacke, is the oldest existing golf course in the county. Originally a nine-hole layout and extended to 18 holes before 1920, the links course measures 5,847 yards to a par of 72 and is moulded around the natural contours of the sand dunes on the mouth of the River Hayle. Panoramic views of St Ives Bay, the Hayle Estuary, Porth Kidney Sands and Godrevy Lighthouse accompany almost every hole, while the wind is an ever-present factor. The RSPB Hayle Estuary reserve flanks the 5th, 6th and 7th holes — a stretch locally known as "Calamity Corner" — with plenty of blind shots, five par threes and characterful old-school links quirks that divide opinion but reward accuracy.
The club is proud of its role as the home of four-time major champion "Long" Jim Barnes, Walker Cup player Philip Rowe (1999) and more recently Harry Hall (2019), who now plays on the US PGA Tour and broke into the world top 50 in 2025. Peter Alliss is an honorary life member. Facilities include a welcoming restaurant and bar, fully stocked pro shop with one-to-one and group coaching, practice putting and chipping greens, and a netted practice area. Visitors and societies are welcomed. The course sits at Church Lane, Lelant, with the train line running alongside — the first green famously lies in front of the cemetery wall.
