Golfer reviews for Welshpool Golf Club
The course has been changed around since 2016 and the 1st hole mentioned in the above review is now the 13th and the 18th now becomes the 12th. Many more changes have been made since 2016 including our Course Manager becoming an R & A Scholar. Whilst I am biased being a member I can truthfully say the course has never been better in the 56 yrs I have been there.
Every visitor comments on our greens and there are none better in close proximity and in some cases much further afield.

Golf Course Overview
Welshpool Golf Club was originally founded in 1894 within the historic Deer Park of Powis Castle, later relocating to the common at Red Bank above the town before settling at its present home on Y Golfa (Golfa Hill) in 1930. The current course was laid out by the five-time Open champion James Braid, with construction carried out by John R. Stutt of Paisley, who compared the finished layout to Gleneagles. Measuring around 5,710 yards to a par of 70, it is short by modern standards but the hilltop setting — some of the views reach as far as Cader Idris and, on clear days, Snowdon — combined with Braid's use of the natural contours creates old-fashioned hillside golf full of pulpit greens, ditches, greenside swales, blind shots and gorse-lined fairways. Standout holes include the technically demanding 8th, where an imprecise shot can be lost in deep rough or over a steep drop, and the celebrated 12th, where remains of an old Roman fort lie near the playing line. Golf writer Bernard Darwin famously remarked after his first visit that his "golfing education" had been incomplete until he had seen it.
The clubhouse offers a friendly bar and dining area with generous home-cooked food, sweeping views over the Severn Valley and is open to visitors during daylight hours. Players of all abilities are welcomed — handicap certificates are not required — and visitors, societies and groups can book competitive green fees with twilight rates available from mid-afternoon; electric buggies are available for hire to help with the undulating terrain. The club has a long history as a Mid Wales County Golf Association host venue and stages regular open competitions across men's, ladies' and seniors' sections. The course sits on the A458 between Welshpool and Mallwyd, roughly 90 minutes from Liverpool by car and well placed for visitors exploring the Welsh border country.

Golf Empire Verdict
Welshpool
"The guy behind the bar who I handed my £12 twilight green-fee to simply laughed after he asked if I had played the course before and I replied, "No"."
I tend to get that quite often due to the nature of courses I visit and I therefore immediately knew I was going to have a fun round. And after the monstrosity of the first hole Welshpool is a cracking little hilltop golf course.
