 Golf Course Overview

Warren Golf Club was founded by the Earl of Devon in 1892 and is the only true links course on the south coast of Devon, occupying a spectacular sand-spit position on the Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve at the mouth of the Exe Estuary. The present layout was designed by five-time Open champion James Braid around 1930, and the routing has changed little since 1927 despite the dynamic natural forces on this sensitive site. The 18-hole course plays to a par of 69 at 5,968 yards with a course rating of 69.6 and slope of 123. Hidden pot bunkers, firm running fairways, deceptive undulations and the ever-present influence of gorse, sea wind and the estuary make this a traditional and genuinely challenging test despite the modest yardage.

The course sits within an internationally significant wildlife conservation area rich in flora and fauna, including the rare Warren Crocus, and the greenkeeping team has been shortlisted for national Conservation Greenkeeping awards. Facilities include a clubhouse with a well-stocked bar, freshly prepared food from the head chef and views over the course and estuary. Visitors, groups and societies are welcomed, with handicap preferred but not essential. Warren Golf Club is reached via Beach Road in Dawlish Warren, off the A379 near Dawlish, with easy access from Exeter via the M5 and Starcross.

★★★ ★ ★
3.6/5

"It’s a real shame that Warren Golf Club, located at the seaside town of Dawlish Warren in South Devon, was omitted from the “True Links” book showcasing the 246 true links golf courses of the world."

I’m sure The Club would have welcomed and appreciated the inevitable additional visitor footfall this would have brought.
