Golf Course Overview

Uphall Golf Club was founded in 1895 on land leased from Sheriff Shairp of the neighbouring Houston Estate, and today occupies an attractive 18-hole parkland setting at Houston Mains on the edge of the village of Uphall. The par-69 course is relatively flat and compact, measuring around 5,646 yards, with mature trees framing fairways and tight boundaries demanding accuracy rather than length. Memorable holes include the opening 404-yard par-4 "Mains," a challenging opener played into the prevailing westerly wind, and the 383-yard par-4 closing hole "Binnie Craig." The course is described by the club as the most progressive in West Lothian, thanks to substantial investment in USGA-specification drainage that keeps play open when many neighbouring courses are closed.

Uphall opened a state-of-the-art new clubhouse in 2024 with a bar, restaurant, changing rooms and function facilities, and the Macdonald Houstoun House Hotel sits adjacent. Visitors and visiting parties are warmly welcomed by prior arrangement, and the club runs a strong junior programme. Uphall lies just seven miles west of Edinburgh Airport and only two minutes from Junction 3 of the M8 motorway, with Uphall train station on the main Edinburgh–Glasgow line just over a mile away.
