 Golf Course Overview

Torquay Golf Club was founded in 1909 and officially opened its present course at Petitor, on the clifftop between St Marychurch and Babbacombe, in May 1911. The original routing was laid out by John Allan, then professional at Royal North Devon, with subsequent alterations by James Braid after the First World War and more recent refinements by Simon Gidman. The 18-hole parkland course plays to a par of 68 at 5,836 yards from the white tees, sitting on a rolling headland around 600 feet above the beaches of Babbacombe and Oddicombe. Tree-lined fairways, high-quality greens and sweeping sea views characterise the layout, which takes in Lyme Bay to the east, Portland Bill on clear days, and Dartmoor to the west.

The club has a rich competitive history: the 1911 opening was marked by an exhibition match between Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor, and a 17-year-old Nick Faldo famously received his first winner's cheque as a professional here at the Torquay Pro-Am — mementos of which Faldo later donated to the club. Facilities include a clubhouse bar and restaurant overlooking the first and 18th holes with a terrace for warmer days, practice areas (two outside nets, a medium range, chipping and putting greens), and a pro shop offering tuition, buggy and club hire. Torquay Golf Club is located on Petitor Road in St Marychurch, around three miles from the centre of Torquay and its harbour.
