 Golf Course Overview

Thurlestone Golf Club dates from 1897 and occupies a breathtaking clifftop position above Bigbury Bay in the South Hams, with the original layout attributed to Harry S. Colt and further work by J.H. Taylor, Fred Hawtree and Donald Steel over the decades. The 18-hole course is the most southerly in Devon and blends traditional links with clifftop golf, playing to a par of 71 at 6,179 yards with a course rating of 71.1 and slope of 130. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the layout overlooks the iconic Thurlestone Rock to the east and the Avon estuary with Burgh Island to the west; Peter Alliss famously compared the views favourably with Pebble Beach in California. Free-draining soil makes the course playable throughout the year, and the club is ranked among the top 100 courses in England.

On-site facilities include a spacious clubhouse with a large main bar, a smaller "spike" bar, lounge and dining room serving freshly cooked meals, and a pro shop offering tuition, club hire and buggies. Unusually for a golf club, the club also runs 12 tennis courts (including 10 grass courts in summer) with a separate tennis clubroom. Visitors and groups are welcomed seven days a week and residents of the nearby Thurlestone Hotel receive complimentary golf subject to terms. The club is located at the end of the village of Thurlestone, reached via narrow country lanes from the A379 and roughly four miles west of Kingsbridge.

Thurlestone

★★★★ ★
4.0/5

"A bit like a coin there are two sides to Thurlestone."

Founded back in 1897 Thurlestone packs a lot of fun and entertainment, as well as plenty of good golf, into its modest 6,189 yards that run alongside Bigbury Bay. The fun actually starts long before you reach the golf club and begins on the three-mile single file Devon country lane that leads down to the wonderfully located course.
