 Golf Course Overview

Tavistock Golf Club was founded in 1890 on land belonging to the Duke of Bedford and is one of the oldest clubs in Devon. The moorland course sits on Whitchurch Down on the western slopes of Dartmoor National Park at around 600 feet elevation, and measures approximately 6,512 yards to a par of 71 (slope 122). The thin soil and crisp moorland turf deliver a firm, fast, links-like playing experience with quick greens that rarely need temporary alternatives, and the sweeping fairways are framed by gorse, bracken and occasional scrubby trees. Deceptive inclines, strategically placed bunkers and several inhibiting doglegs make the course more demanding than it first appears, with panoramic views across the Dartmoor tors to the east and toward Cornwall to the west.

The current clubhouse, originally built by the Duke of Bedford in 1915 and later bought by the members, offers a bar, dining and function space with a reputation for first-class catering from experienced chefs. A PGA professional and pro shop provide tuition, equipment and booking services, and the club runs a busy programme of Open competitions. Visitors, societies and green-fee players are welcome year-round. Tavistock is located off Down Road, a short distance from the centre of the market town of Tavistock, close to Whitchurch and accessible from the A386.
