Golf Course Overview
Stover Golf Club traces its origins to 1894, when Major Harold St Maur laid out a private course on his Stover House estate that was later opened to the public and known as Stover and Mid-Devon Golf Club from 1899. The present club dates from 1931, with a remodelling by the five-time Open champion James Braid in 1930 and further refinements by architect Simon Gidman in 2019. The 18-hole parkland course plays to a par of 69 over around 5,982 yards from the white tees (some sources quote just over 6,200 yards from the back markers), with mature trees, streams, picturesque ponds and notable elevation change shaping the round and views over Dartmoor in the distance.
The modern clubhouse offers a bar and restaurant open to the public, practice facilities and a PGA professional, with a pheasant-rearing shed from the original estate still in use as a trolley store. Society bookings, visitor rounds and function hire are all welcomed. Stover is set on Bovey Road half a mile from the A38 on the A382 heading south toward Newton Abbot, adjacent to the Trago Mills Retail Park, making it one of the most accessible parkland venues in the region for golfers arriving from the M5.
