Golf Course Overview
Spey Bay Golf Club opened in 1907 to a design by the legendary Ben Sayers — considered by many to be one of the Open Championship's most successful players without ever actually winning it. The course occupies a distinctive stretch of Moray Firth coastline at the mouth of the River Spey, laid out over a series of raised storm-beach ridges accumulated during periods of higher relative sea levels some 6,000 years ago. The ridges of boulders and pebbles coincide largely with the rough of gorse and heather, while the fairways run through the shallow valleys between. The 18-hole layout plays to a par of 70 over around 6,219 yards, following a traditional out-and-back routing with sea views through much of the back nine. The par-3 8th "Plateau" marks the turn with a small green perched on a hillock, while the semi-blind par-3 15th "Sea" requires a carry over a yawning front bunker. Former Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was a Spey Bay member, and the championship trophy he presented to the club remains in situ today.
After a period of relative decline — the onsite Richmond Gordon Hotel that once drew wealthy golfing clientele burned down in 1965 — Spey Bay was acquired by LinksDAO in 2023 and is now undergoing a dramatic transformation, with an ambitious masterplan by Mike DeVries to create a fully reversible 18-hole championship layout with up to 22 greens and five different routings. Current facilities include a clubhouse with bar and restaurant, changing rooms, practice area, putting green, driving range, and club, trolley and buggy hire. The course sits at Tugnet, Spey Bay, near Fochabers, equidistant between Aberdeen and Inverness.

Golf Empire Verdict
Spey Bay
"I’m going to buy Spey Bay a drum. They obviously haven’t got one... because nobody is banging it for them. And they should be!"
I stumbled across this natural and highly captivating links course on a family holiday to the Scottish Highlands. All I can say is; what a discovery!
