An absolute hidden gem.

You don't have to drive all the way to the north to experience real links feeling.

Southerness has it all and additionally the chances for sunny and fine whether a definitely higher. Worth a visit!

 Golf Course Overview

Southerness Golf Club was founded in 1946 when Major Richard Oswald, local landowner and keen golfer, resolved to create a golf course on the sandy linksland of his Solway-coast estate. The course was laid out by Philip Mackenzie Ross (better known for his work at Turnberry after its wartime disruption), built by Sutton and Sons of Reading, and opened in 1947. Many consider Southerness to be Mackenzie Ross's defining achievement. The championship links measures 6,735 yards to a par of 69 and has been continuously ranked among the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland since 1990. The 421-yard par-four 12th, which doglegs left to right with bunkers, pond, beach and the Solway Firth all in play, is widely regarded as the best hole. The club's emblem is the Southerness Lighthouse of 1748 — the second oldest surviving lighthouse in Scotland.

Southerness has hosted the Scottish Amateur, British Youths, British Ladies Stroke Play and Senior Home Internationals, among many other championships. The level terrain allows easy walking with no hills to climb, and the clubhouse offers catering, bar and changing facilities with visitors from recognised clubs warmly welcomed. The course sits 14 miles south of Dumfries on the Solway Firth coast, with the Cumbrian Lake District visible to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. It is around two hours by car from Glasgow International Airport.

Golf Empire Verdict

Southerness

★★★★ ★
4.5/5

"Except for the undeniable beauty of the 12th hole there’s nothing truly outstanding at Southerness."

Please note that this isn’t meant with negative connotations though because everything about this true links course is of a consistently high standard and is undoubtedly one of Scotland’s sleeping gems.
