Golf Course Overview
Saunton Golf Club was founded in 1897 and sits on the vast sand dune system of Braunton Burrows in North Devon, an area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Area of Conservation and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The club's two championship links courses are among the finest in England. The East Course, originally laid out by Herbert Fowler in 1897 and updated by him in 1919 with further modern enhancements by Mackenzie & Ebert from 2013, measures 6,774 yards to a par of 71 with a course rating of 74.7 and slope of 134 — seven of the par 4s play over 400 yards, and the 16th "Fowler" dogleg is a signature risk-reward hole. The West Course, originally created by Fowler in 1935 but lost during wartime military use, was redesigned by Frank Pennink and reopened in 1975, with further refinement by Donald Steel; it plays to 6,596 yards and par 71.
Saunton has hosted many prestigious amateur championships including the English Amateur, the Brabazon Trophy, the Seniors Amateur Championship in 2006 and 2024, and Sergio García's British Boys' Championship win in 1997. The recently refurbished clubhouse has panoramic views, a bar and restaurant, pro shop, locker rooms, two putting greens and practice ground. Saunton sits just off the B3231 Saunton Road about two to three miles west of Braunton, eight miles from Barnstaple station.

"If anyone dare claim there is a better 36 holes of links golf at one golf club in England than at Saunton I'm pretty sure I could make an unquestionable case for this wonderful piece of linksland."
