 Golf Course Overview

Royal Winchester Golf Club was founded in 1888 and originally laid out at Morn Hill near Chilcomb, east of Winchester. The club moved to its current site on Teg Down in 1901 to a new course set out by J.H. Taylor, with subsequent refinements by Harry Colt. The 18-hole downland course plays to a par of 72 over around 6,387 yards on free-draining chalk, meaning play continues throughout the year. Rolling Hampshire countryside and wide-ranging views across the north-east of the county characterise the round, and a bunker regeneration project completed in 2019 has restored uniform playability.

The club is a private members' club with more than 800 members and operates a relaxed, modern clubhouse with bar, dining and function facilities. A full range of practice areas, pro shop and tuition are available, and visitors and societies are welcomed. The Royal prefix — granted by King George V in 1913 — reflects the club's long heritage. The entrance is on Sarum Road on the western outskirts of Winchester, a few minutes from junction 11 of the M3.
