Golf Course Overview
Royal Porthcawl Golf Club was founded in 1891 by a group of Cardiff businessmen and received its Royal patronage from King Edward VII in 1909 — one of only two Welsh clubs entitled to the "Royal" prefix. The championship links course at Rest Bay, reshaped over the years by Charles Gibson, Harry Colt, Fred Hawtree, JH Taylor, Tom Simpson and more recently Mackenzie & Ebert, plays to 7,152 yards to a par of 72 with a superb slope rating of 143. Uniquely among British links, the sea is in view from every hole, and the course is characterised by firm undulating fairways, superb pot bunkering and beautifully sloping greens. Wales' number one course (Golf World 2025) and Britain & Ireland's 33rd best, Porthcawl has hosted the Walker Cup (1995), Curtis Cup (1964), British Masters (1961), six Amateur Championships and the Senior Open Championship in 2014, 2017 and 2023. Bernhard Langer's 13-shot victory in 2023 set a Senior Open record.
The traditional clubhouse offers fine dining and drinks, and the on-site Dormy House provides first-class accommodation for twelve (six singles and three twins). Facilities include a driving range, practice putting and chipping greens, pro shop, caddies, club hire and buggies. Royal Porthcawl is accessed from Junction 37 of the M4 — follow the A4229 towards Porthcawl and then signs for Nottage and Rest Bay.
