Golfer reviews for Royal North Devon Golf Club
The old 8th is now out of commission & the replacement in play. Time will tell how well this hole fits in.
The new angle this necessitates and elevation it provides on the 9th tee makes this a more interesting hole, and the required shot into this green that Tom Doak detailed in his book “Anatomy of a Golf Course” is actually more relevant for me as long par 4 as a higher handicapper than it was as a par 5.
The previous 7th green will be missed but the new 7th is a very good par 5 resurrecting an old putting surface very well.
Considering the limitations imposed, I think the members should be pleased with the necessary changes carried out by Mackenzie & Ebert.
I have played several times at RND in the last 2 years. Most recently I played in their Seniors Pairs Open in mid June 2019 and 2 events in their golf week in Mid August 2019. The organisation of all the events was good .
The course was in good condition but unfortunately suffering from abundant sheep's droppings . If the wind blows it can be a tough challenge. The staff were friendly and the off course facilities and food were of a good standard.
Practice facilities are excellent with a practice range with ball dispenser, both indoor and out door practice nets together with chipping and putting greens and practice bunker. There are also two par 3 courses.
The display of historical golf memorabilia in the clubhouse is also well worth a look.

Golf Course Overview
Royal North Devon Golf Club was founded in 1864 and is the oldest golf course in England, a status frequently recognised by the nickname "the St Andrews of the South". The original links was laid out by Old Tom Morris of St Andrews, and Herbert Fowler carried out an influential revision in 1908 that added length and three new short holes while reshaping the bunkering. The club received royal patronage in 1867 from Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). The links sits on the common land of Northam Burrows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest where sheep and horses still graze, and stretches to around 6,682 yards for a par of 72 from the back tees. The layout is characterised by vast natural fairways, the famous Cape bunker on the par-4 4th, the railway-sleepered "Fowler's Bunker" on the 12th, and exposure to Atlantic trade winds, producing fast-running links golf in harmony with its wild surroundings.
Notable former members include five-time Open champion J.H. Taylor and two-time British Amateur champion Horace Hutchinson. The course has hosted The Amateur Championship in 1912, 1925 and 1931, and the Ladies' Golf Club at RND, founded in 1868, is the second-oldest in the world. The historic clubhouse contains a noted golf museum, with full bar, dining, pro shop and one of the largest junior sections in England. Royal North Devon is located on Golf Links Road between Northam and Westward Ho!, one mile from Westward Ho! off the A39 and about ten miles west of Barnstaple station.

Golf Empire Verdict
Royal North Devon
"Royal North Devon, or Westward Ho! as it is often fondly referred to, is a very special place."
That much is obvious from the moment you drive into the car park and are informed, by an unmissable sign on the side of the historic clubhouse, that you have just arrived at England's oldest course.
