Golf Course Overview
Royal Dornoch Golf Club traces golf on the Dornoch Firth links back to 1616, with the club formally founded in 1877 and granted Royal status in 1906. Old Tom Morris was invited north in 1886 to update the original 9 holes and returned to extend the course to 18 by 1889, famously remarking "there canna be better for gowf". Dornoch native Donald Ross, who went on to design Pinehurst No.2, served as greenkeeper and professional from 1893 to 1899, and the Championship Course has since been refined by John H. Taylor, George Duncan and most recently Mackenzie & Ebert in 2017 and 2020. It measures 6,799 yards with a par of 70, and is regularly ranked among the world's top 10 courses, with Golf Digest placing it No. 2 internationally. The club also operates the 18-hole Struie Course.
Honorary member Tom Watson famously called it the most fun he'd ever had on a golf course, and the club has welcomed Presidents, Prime Ministers and golfing greats including Ben Crenshaw and Jack Nicklaus. The new clubhouse offers a bar and dining with lockers, showers and drying facilities, complimentary push and electric trolley hire, club hire and a halfway house behind the 9th green. Buggies are available only for medical reasons. A third 18-hole course is planned following the purchase of adjoining land in 2024.

We are in an eatery in the historic town debating just how good tomorrow could be as we embark on playing unquestionably one of the World's greatest golf courses. We overhear a conversation at the table next to us. Clearly a member of Royal Dornoch a man tells the couple he is sat with, "It's so green and soft at the moment... So un-pure... So uninspiring."
