Golf Course Overview
Royal Cromer Golf Club officially opened in January 1888 and was granted its Royal prefix at Christmas 1887 under the patronage of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The original layout was shaped by Henry Broadhurst and George Fernie, with Old Tom Morris of St Andrews setting out further holes in 1891 and 1895, and subsequent redesign work from Harry Colt, J.H. Taylor and James Braid. The course today is an 18-hole clifftop layout of 6,528 yards with a par of 72, rising up to 320 feet above the beach and famously featuring a signature 14th hole played alongside the Cromer lighthouse. Gorse, quarry valleys and sandy hummocks combine with coastal wind to make it a demanding and memorable round.
Royal Cromer has a rich amateur pedigree, having hosted the 1905 Ladies British Amateur Championship which gave rise to the Curtis Cup concept, and it still stages senior opens, county events and society days today. Facilities include a clubhouse with restaurant, a pro shop, practice range, buggy and club hire and the renowned Henry Broadhurst 'History Room' which displays memorabilia of the club's past. The course is on Overstrand Road on the eastern side of Cromer, easily reached from Norwich via the A140 and well placed on the north Norfolk golfing tour route.
