Really enjoyed my round, first few holes ease you into the round with the first four holes all under 400yrds in length, you don’t need to hit a driver, then it’s starts to show it’s uniqueness, the heather was thick and tough to get out of. The 249yrd par 3 is all down hill and not as challenging as it looks on the card, the course reward accuracy off the tee, it’s not always straight forward getting back onto the fairway. The greens were slow but it’s that time of year, between two of us we had one birdie, that was a monster putt on the 17th. Some fairways could have been better but the surroundings views more than made up for it. There’s a lot of dog walkers to keep an eye out for, I was surprised how many none golfers I saw on the course.
Very enjoyable day, challenging course, good company.

Golf Course Overview
Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club was founded in December 1888, originally as the Ashdown Forest & Tunbridge Wells Golf Club, and Queen Victoria conferred the Royal prefix in 1893. Set on ancient heathland 732 feet above sea level in the High Weald AONB, it is one of the longest-established clubs in Sussex. The original layout was designed by founding member W. R. Lee, with modifications by Harry Hunter in 1892 and by long-standing Ashdown professional Jack Rowe in 1897 and again in 1922. The 18-hole Old Course plays to around 6,591 yards to a par of 72 and is famously bunkerless — heather, humps, hollows, pools and streams form nature's defence. The shorter West Course (5,537 yards, par 68) was laid out as a nine-hole Ladies' Course in 1889 and extended to 18 holes in 1932.
The Old Course is currently ranked (2025) in the Golf World Top 100 Courses in GB&I, has served as an Open Championship Regional Qualifying venue and has hosted the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship. The traditional clubhouse dates from 1893 and retains much of its original character, with dining rooms recognised for their quality. A performance centre and tuition programme support membership development. The course sits off Chapel Lane in Forest Row, around four miles south of East Grinstead and a short drive from the M25 (J6) and London Gatwick.
