Golf Course Overview
Royal Aberdeen Golf Club was founded in 1780 as the Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, making it the sixth oldest golf club in the world. Membership of the Society was originally determined by ballot, and as early as 1783 its members became the first in golf to introduce the five-minute limit on searching for a lost ball. The Society renamed as the Aberdeen Golf Club in 1815 on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, and in 1903 King Edward VII conferred the "Royal" title. Members played on the Queen's Links until 1888 when they moved across the River Don to the magnificent links at Balgownie. The Balgownie Course was originally designed by the Simpson Brothers (Archie and Robert) of Carnoustie, and was later refined by James Braid in 1925, with subsequent work by Hawtree Ltd (2007) and Donald Steel. It plays to a par of 71 over 6,916 yards and adheres to a traditional "out and back" design along the North Sea shore. The outward nine — widely acknowledged as one of the finest in links golf anywhere in the world — threads through towering dunes, while the inland back nine returns over a higher, more exposed plateau. The signature par-5 8th is protected by nine bunkers. The second course at Royal Aberdeen, the Silverburn, is a short loop of around 4,021 yards and par 64.
The club has hosted numerous national and international events including the 2005 Senior British Open, the 2011 Walker Cup and the 2014 Scottish Open, and is consistently ranked among the finest courses in Scotland and the British Isles. The traditional clubhouse offers full bar and dining facilities (jacket and tie for the lounge and dining room), a pro shop, practice putting, and club hire. The course lies on Links Road at Bridge of Don, just over a mile north of Aberdeen city centre and a short distance from neighbouring Murcar Links.
