Golf Course Overview
Portmahomack (Tarbat) Golf Club was formally established in 1909, although a 9-hole layout had been in play on the Tarbatness peninsula since 1894. The site was identified by John Sutherland, the influential secretary of Royal Dornoch, and the first tee shot on the new course was struck on 17 June 1909. The 9-hole links-style course measures 4,880 yards over 18 holes with a par of 68, with the total yardage for the first nine at 2,423 yards and the second nine extending to 2,457 yards. The undulating seaside layout offers generous fairways that accommodate social and holiday golfers, while tight small greens test experienced players, with the 8th's elevated green particularly notorious.
The "Tee Up" Café clubhouse offers tasty affordable meals and snacks with a friendly local welcome, and the club operates a walk-on honesty-box system with no booking required, though members have preference on Wednesday mornings and Saturdays. Uniquely for an east coast Scottish village, Portmahomack faces west across the Dornoch Firth, giving spectacular sunset views, and the club lies just 9 miles off the A9 on the North Coast 500 route, with the Pictish Tarbat Discovery Centre just behind the 8th green.

"Portmahomack Golf Club, sometimes known as Tarbat, is situated above the quaint seaside village of the same name on the Southern shores of the Dornoch Firth."
Tarbat is a course I have long wanted to play but previous visits to Dornoch and travels through Inverness have not quite worked out in my favour to squeeze a quick loop at this nine-hole* links course which dates back to 1909.
