 Golf Course Overview

Parkstone Golf Club was founded in 1909 by Lord Wimborne as the Parkstone & Canford Cliffs Golf Links, and is now consistently ranked among the top 100 courses in Great Britain & Ireland by Golf Monthly and Golf World. The original layout was designed by Willie Park Jr., twice Open Champion in the 1880s, and was significantly redesigned by James Braid in the 1930s, with later refinements from Donald Steel, Tom MacKenzie, Martin Ebert and Martin Hawtree. The heathland course plays to a par of 72 over around 6,282 yards, with pine- and heather-lined fairways, lakes and sand-based undulating terrain that affords glimpses of Poole Harbour from the higher ground. Reg Whitcombe, the 1938 Open Champion, famously described the club as "There Is No Better Place".

Peter Alliss served as club professional at Parkstone from 1957 to 1970 and the club's heritage includes strong Ryder Cup links. The clubhouse offers fine dining, a well-regarded pro shop and practice area, and the club runs an active competition calendar including open events. Visitor tee times are available on weekdays with advance booking required. Parkstone lies on Links Road midway between Bournemouth and Poole, just a mile from Parkstone railway station and easily reached from the A35.

Golf Empire Verdict

Parkstone

★★★★ ★
4.5/5

"The biggest compliment I can give to Parkstone is that I cannot think of many inland golf courses in the British Isles that are superior."

By my personal reckoning there are less than a dozen and if you factor in that there are around 3,000 in total across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland this is high praise indeed. It’s not perfect, but it’s not far off.
