We drove up from Monifieth to play their Winter Open Competition and we loved the course and the club. Would do it again.

 Golf Course Overview

Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club (also known as Newburgh Links) was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest golf clubs in Scotland. The original nine-hole layout was presented to the people of the fishing village of Newburgh for their enjoyment by John H. Udny of Udny, and measured just 1 mile 401 yards in total. The course was extended to 18 holes around 1901 and, after being reduced back to nine during the mid-century, was returned to a full 18 in 1996 when new land was acquired to the south on the Foveran Links. The current layout plays to a par of 72 over 6,423 yards, and is effectively a course of two halves — the older back nine is a traditional, gorse-lined, natural Scottish links, while the modern front nine (opened in 1994) has a more contemporary feel with tiered greens and more undulating terrain. Quirky features include the stone wall crossing the fairway of the 4th hole "Drovers". In 1897 Crown Prince Vajiravudh of Siam learned to play golf on these links while staying at the village's Udny Arms Hotel.

A modern clubhouse was opened in 2001 by 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and offers bar, restaurant and function facilities with stunning views over the Ythan Estuary and Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve. Facilities include a club shop, pull trolleys, changing rooms with showers, a six-hole practice course and a large practice putting green. Since 2023 the club has been under the management of the OGV Group. The course sits on Beach Road at Newburgh, 2 miles north of Trump International Links and mid-way between Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay.

Newburgh on Ythan

★★★ ★ ★
3.7/5

"Newburgh-on-Ythan is very much a tale of two halves, but each one is worth listening to."

Dating back to 1888 this delightful links course was originally a nine-hole layout until as recently as 1996 when new land was acquired and a further nine were developed.
