Golf Course Overview

McDonald Golf Club at Ellon (operated as Ellon Golf Club) takes its name from its benefactor Sir James McDonald who, in 1926, gifted the old woodlands of Hospital Wood to the people of Ellon. The original nine-hole course opened in 1927 and was later extended to a full 18. The layout plays to a par of 70 over approximately 5,942 yards and is cut through magnificent mature forest with stately trees and distinctive rhododendron bushes, home to red squirrels and other native wildlife. A natural stream twists and turns across the well-established front nine and features on almost every hole, with burns, doglegs and demanding par 4s such as the 4th, 5th and 6th testing club selection. The back nine is shorter and tighter, and finishes with a pair of demanding par 4s at the 17th and 18th that regularly wreck scorecards.

The clubhouse offers a bar, catering and function facilities, with the fully stocked pro shop handling club fitting, re-gripping, re-studding and repairs. Practice nets, a small practice area and a putting green round out the facilities. Pull and battery-powered trolleys are available to hire. McDonald sits on Hospital Road on the edge of Ellon in the heart of the Buchan countryside, 16 miles north of Aberdeen and mid-way between the fishing coast and castle country.
