Entering an open competition at Luffenham Heath offers the chance to play a classic heathland course in England's smallest county, designed by Harry Colt and Charles Alison under the patronage of the Earl of Ancaster and opened in 1911 with an exhibition match between James Braid and Harry Vardon, designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and recently upgraded to host Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship from 2013 to 2017.

Golf Course Overview
Luffenham Heath Golf Club opened in 1911 with a heathland design first conceived by Harry Colt and Charles Hugh Alison, though most of the credit for the course's character belongs to James Braid who put his imprint on the original layout. The course plays to a par of 70 over 6,563 yards and features classic Braid touches — cross bunkering, grassy wastes and subtly undulating greens set among hawthorns, gorse, oaks and pines. A major renovation under Dr Martin Hawtree in 2004 modernised the course while preserving its character. The course has hosted Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship and sits comfortably within golf magazines' top 100 lists for England.
An exclusive contemporary members' club, Luffenham Heath is a sought-after destination for visiting golfers and society days, welcoming visitors most days except Tuesdays by prior booking. The clubhouse provides dining and bar facilities, with a well-stocked pro shop. The club sits just five miles from the A1 and approximately 15 minutes from the Georgian town of Stamford.

"Firm, fast running and quietly getting better."
It had been over a decade since my first visit to Luffenham Heath, and returning last week — this time in the firm, fast conditions I'd always promised myself I'd come back for — only confirmed what I suspected on the drive home all those years ago: this is one of the finest inland courses in the Midlands, and a thoroughly rewarding day's golf in England's smallest county.
