Golf Course Overview

The Kilmacolm Golf Club was founded in 1891 with the original layout by Willie Campbell, refined into the present-day classic moorland course by James Braid in 1924, with later modifications by Donald Steel, Tom MacKenzie and Martin Ebert. The 18-hole course is set on a plateau some 400 feet above sea level on either side of the Houston Road, and measures 5,961 yards from the men's medal tees to a par of 69. The course architects have made full use of the natural hills and hollows, with narrow fairways lined by heather, gorse, bracken and trees of many varieties. Length is not a factor here — accuracy is — and few holes run in similar directions. Notable holes include the 230-yard par-3 6th (Right of Way), the blind par-3 12th (Punchbowl), the par-4 8th (Mound) and the par-4 14th (Quarry).

The course has been praised by Walter Hagen and Bernard Gallacher and is consistently ranked among Scotland's top 100 courses and GB&I's Top 100 Courses under £65. Practice facilities include a 300-yard driving range with seven bays, an indoor golf studio, putting and chipping greens. Visitors are welcomed weekdays and weekend afternoons. Kilmacolm sits about 30 minutes west of Glasgow, with the nearby village having gained its character as an affluent dormitory village after the 1869 arrival of the railway.
