Golfer reviews for Isle of Purbeck Golf Club
A must play if in Dorset
Played in their Senior Open in early August 2021 and we were blessed with light winds and 23° temp. Very undulating track with some stunning golf holes. The 5th will live long in the memory with spectacular views across The Solent with The Needles clearly in view.
Fairways were patchy as sadly they have had leatherjackets visiting. Club have recently appointed the former master green keeper from Wimbledon GC - recently bought by LTA and his input is already showing. Greens were excellent.
If you’re having a bad round just console yourself with the splendid vistas. Peter Alliss described the views as the most spectacular he’s seen from any golf course anywhere in the world!
The following day after we played it poured with rain and winds were gusting 25mph. So glad we played the day before.

Golf Course Overview
The Isle of Purbeck Golf Club was founded in 1892 on the Studland peninsula and is among the most scenic courses in England, with architectural input from Harry Colt. The venue offers 27 holes in total: the Purbeck Championship Course plays to a par of 70 over roughly 6,295 yards across rolling heathland, while the shorter 9-hole Dene Course welcomes beginners and visitors seeking a more relaxed round. The Purbeck layout is famed for panoramic views across Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, Bournemouth and the Solent — the 5th tee is regarded as one of the great viewpoints in British golf. The four par threes face different compass points, so each plays very differently depending on wind. The course has been ranked inside the Golf World Top 100 X-Factor courses.
Former owners of the club include Dr Kenneth Darrell-Waters and his wife, the children's author Enid Blyton; the present clubhouse, built in 1966, features giant Purbeck fossils in its walls. The club is set within a heathland nature reserve and is engaged in an active programme with the RSPB, the National Trust and Natural England to restore heather and rare habitat. Facilities include a pro shop, practice area, bar and restaurant with outstanding views, and a full calendar of visitor, society and winter warmer packages. The Corfe Road location is reached via the A351 from Wareham and Corfe Castle, or by the Sandbanks chain ferry from Poole.

Golf Empire Verdict
Isle of Purbeck
"The Isle of Purbeck is often noted for its glorious 360 degree panoramic vista over the nature reserve that its engaging holes have been thoughtfully etched through. The views are indeed superb yet the course is every bit their match."
The course is unquestionably of its own character, it cannot easily be stereotyped into “links”, “heathland”, “parkland” etc… as we often like to do. This is its ace card.
