Golf Course Overview
Gailes Links is the Ayrshire-coast home of Glasgow Golf Club, founded in 1787 and the ninth-oldest golf club in the world. The course opened for play on 19 May 1892 on land leased from the Duke of Portland, with an early redesign by Willie Fernie of Troon and a substantial reworking in 1912 by 1887 and 1889 Open champion Willie Park Jnr in collaboration with the club professional John Tulloch. Park considered Gailes one of his finest creations, and the traditional heather- and gorse-lined links has remained largely as he envisioned it, stretching to 6,903 yards off the championship tees with a par of 71. The course has been an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue since 1973 and was the sole Scottish qualifying course from 2014 to 2017.
The club's Patrick Macgregor Chalmers-designed clubhouse is open all day with breakfast, lunch and lighter fare, an outdoor terrace overlooking the course, a well-stocked pro shop, practice range and putting green. Events hosted over the years include the Home Internationals, Europe v USA Palmer Trophy, Scottish PGA Championship and the Tennant Cup — the oldest open amateur strokeplay event in the world. Gailes sits on Gailes Road midway between Troon and Irvine, within easy reach of Prestwick and Glasgow.

Golf has been played over this fine links since 1892 and until 2016 it is the only Scottish final qualifying course for The Open. Its pedigree is undoubted as a venue for elite championship golf for it also co-hosted The Amateur Championship in 2012 and The Palmer Cup in 2008.
