Golf Course Overview
Ellesborough Golf Club was founded in 1906 on the edge of the Chiltern escarpment in the Vale of Aylesbury. The original nine holes were designed by Willie Park Jr, winner of two Open Championships, and the course was subsequently extended to 18 holes in the early 1930s with additional work by James Braid. Further refinements were carried out in the 1990s by Tom MacKenzie and Martin Ebert. The course plays to a par of 71 over approximately 6,384 yards and sits on chalk-based downland, which drains superbly well and keeps the course playable all year round. Gently undulating fairways wind through the landscape beneath the escarpment, and the greens are widely regarded as some of the fastest and truest in the county, though notoriously difficult to read.
The club enjoys spectacular views across the Vale of Aylesbury towards Coombe Hill and sits next to the Prime Minister's country residence at Chequers. Facilities include a pro shop, practice areas, a putting green, changing rooms and a clubhouse serving food and drink. Visitors, societies and corporate groups are welcomed, and the club has hosted Open Championship Regional Qualifying rounds over the years. The course is located just off the B4010 between Aylesbury and Wendover, easily reached from the M25 and M40.
