 Golf Course Overview

Dundonald Links occupies a historic stretch of Ayrshire coast where Willie Fernie laid out the original Dundonald course in 1911. The site was requisitioned during the Second World War for Dundonald Camp, which rehearsed D-Day landings, and the course lay dormant for decades before being acquired by Loch Lomond Golf Club and redesigned by Kyle Phillips, reopening in 2005. The par-72 links stretches to around 7,100 yards with large undulating greens, deep pot bunkering and strategic water ditches, most notably at the long par-five 18th. Hosting highlights include the 2017 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and, from 2023, Final Qualifying for The Open Championship.

Darwin Escapes acquired the course in 2019 and invested around £25 million in a new clubhouse, eighteen luxury golf lodges and twenty-two bedroom suites, opening in 2021. The Canny Crow restaurant and Spike Bar offer dining with views across the Isle of Arran, while a 330-yard range, short-game area and putting greens support practice. Dundonald operates as a high-end pay-and-play resort with no conventional membership, and sits between Gailes Links and Kilmarnock Barassie on the A78 corridor, around 24 miles from Glasgow and five minutes from Prestwick International Airport.

Golf Empire Verdict

Dundonald Links

★★★★ ★
4.3/5

"In an area steeped in history and tradition Dundonald Links has, in the space of just over ten years, commanded the respect of golfers who flock to this part of Scotland to tackle Open Championship venues and other prestigious links courses."

Wedged between Gailes Links, Kilmarnock Barrasie and Western Gailes, and just up the road from Prestwick, Troon and Turnberry it is testament to the course that is has also gained the appreciation from neighbouring courses as well.
