 Golf Course Overview

Dunbar Golf Club was formally established in 1856, making it one of the ten oldest golf clubs in Scotland still in existence, although documented golf on the ground dates back more than 400 years. The championship links has been shaped over time by a succession of great golfers, with Old Tom Morris making significant alterations in 1894 and James Braid together with Ben Sayers laying out most of the course as it plays today during 1922–24. A further extension in 2008 brought the course to its current length of roughly 6,597 yards. Well-defined holes follow the natural contours of a narrow strip of linksland between a distinctive red sandstone deer-park wall and the rocky shoreline, with the ever-changing sea wind demanding accuracy and judicious club selection.

Dunbar has served as a final qualifying venue for The Open whenever played at Muirfield and has hosted the British Boys', Scottish Amateur, Scottish PGA, Scottish Boys', British Ladies' and Ladies Home Internationals, as well as the inaugural European Tour PGA Championship in 1968. Facilities include a welcoming clubhouse with mixed lounges and a family-friendly ethos, a well-stocked PGA professional shop, caddies by prior arrangement, and a practice area. The club sits on the East Lothian coast around 30 miles east of Edinburgh and remains an essential stop on any Golf Coast itinerary.

"Golf doesn't get any closer to the North Sea than at Dunbar."

In fact it's even possible to play from the rocky beach on at least one of the holes... as I found out! The suspenseful drive down the narrow lane to the clubhouse really whets your appetite for coastal golf.
