 Golf Course Overview

Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club was founded in 1894 and is the older of the two town clubs that bear the Dumfries name. The course at Laurieston Avenue on the western outskirts of the town was designed by Willie Fernie, winner of the 1883 Open, and plays 6,222 yards to a par of 70 (SSS 71). Set in rolling parkland with mature woodland, the layout is reasonably flat but offers a stout challenge for the club golfer, with the 406-yard par-4 10th — named after the designer himself — counted among the highlights. The greens and fairways are maintained in immaculate condition year-round.

The club hosts the 36-hole scratch Sutherland Chalice each year, open to amateurs playing off a handicap of four or less, and runs an active junior section with coaching linked to the nearby Tower Wood Golf Centre. The clubhouse welcomes visiting golfers and golfing parties, with designated visitor tee times mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and the professional shop offers equipment and hire. Booking ahead is advisable in the summer months and at weekends. The course is easily reached from the A75 bypass and sits a short drive from the centre of Dumfries.
