Dumfries & County Golf Club

 Golf Course Overview

Dumfries and County Golf Club — known locally as "The County" — was founded in May 1912 to meet the growing demand for golf in the town. The original 18-hole course on the Nunfield Estate was laid out by 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie, then professional at Royal Troon, who ingeniously planned the course in two loops of nine both finishing at the clubhouse. In the late 1920s James Braid was brought in to tighten the layout with new bunkers, and he returned again to add length when further land was acquired. The parkland course today measures 5,925 yards to a par of 69 (72 for women), with USGA-standard greens, a double green shared by the 1st and 6th holes, and a famously short par-three 14th that holds the club's hole-in-one record.

The recently refurbished clubhouse has a comfortable lounge and restaurant with views of the 18th, alongside first-class changing facilities. The pro shop stocks six major equipment brands and offers club fitting, repairs, tuition and hire, with a putting green, driving range and indoor simulator studio. The course has hosted the British Youths Championship, Scottish Girls' Championship and British Senior Ladies' Championship, and is a short distance from the A75 on the Edinburgh Road side of Dumfries, making it easy to combine with Crichton and Dumfries & Galloway in a town-wide golf break.
