Golf Course Overview
Duff House Royal Golf Club has one of the most distinguished architectural pedigrees in Scotland. Although organised golf in Banff dates from 1871 with the Banff Golf Club, the course in its current location opened in 1909/1910 after the Duke of Fife, Alexander Duff, donated land on the banks of the River Deveron to the towns of Banff and Macduff. The original layout was designed by Archie Simpson of Royal Aberdeen and officially opened by a match between J.H. Taylor and James Braid. Following agricultural use during the First World War, Dr Alister MacKenzie — later of Augusta National fame — comprehensively redesigned the course in 1923 with his brother Major C.A. MacKenzie overseeing construction. The MacKenzie layout opened in August 1924 and the club received its royal title as the course's present name in 1925 under the patronage of Princess Louise, uniquely using "Royal" as a suffix. The course plays to a par of 68 over 6,118 yards and retains many original MacKenzie signatures: large, two-tiered greens, shared double greens (1 & 17, 6 & 15) and strategic bunkering. The River Deveron borders holes 7, 9, 16 and 17.
The clubhouse offers a large comfortable bar and lounge with panoramic windows looking over the opening and closing holes, with the Hill o' Doune and river as backdrop. Full catering is available for lunches, snacks and evening meals, and the course is open to members and visitors throughout the year subject to booking. Duff House itself, an 18th-century William Adam mansion in the care of Historic Scotland, sits within the course. Currently ranked among Scotland's top parkland courses, the club has hosted numerous national and regional events including the Kings Links North East Open.
