 Golf Course Overview

Crowborough Beacon Golf Club was founded in 1895 as a nine-hole layout on the Alchorne estate and extended to 18 holes in 1905. The course sits at close to 800 feet above sea level on the southern slopes of the High Weald, giving panoramic views across the South Downs to Brighton and the Channel. Dr Alister MacKenzie redesigned eight holes during the 1920s, work documented in Bernard Darwin's 1926 book about the club and now officially recognised on the worldwide list of MacKenzie courses. The 18-hole heathland layout measures around 6,319 yards to a par of 71, with springy turf, heather-lined fairways, doglegs and dramatic elevation changes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle served as Club Captain in 1910 and lived close to the course.

Facilities include a welcoming clubhouse with bar, balcony and dining room overlooking the course, a pro shop, PGA tuition and practice areas. Visiting societies and green-fee players are warmly received, and the club has a long record of hosting Sussex county events. Crowborough Beacon sits on Beacon Road, about eight miles south of Tunbridge Wells on the A26, giving easy access from Kent, London, Gatwick and Sussex.

Golf Empire Verdict

Crowborough Beacon

★★★★ ★
4.1/5

"Crowborough Beacon Golf Club was founded in 1895 and boasts far-reaching views which are just as mesmerising as the golf course itself."

Admittedly I was a little disappointment with the condition on my visit in July 2015 but the strength of course still shone through and it's easy to see why this venue is so highly regarded. Those taking advantage of a twilight green-fee of £25 certainly won't be disappointed.
