Golf Course Overview
Cowal Golf Club was founded in October 1891 and sits on the hillside above Kirn overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The original nine-hole layout was designed by Willie Campbell of Bridge of Weir, and the course was reconstructed and expanded to eighteen holes by James Braid between 1924 and 1928. The mature parkland and heathland course on the south-east facing slopes of the Cowal peninsula measures around 6,063 yards to a par of 70, with spectacular views across the estuary to Bute, Arran and as far as Ailsa Craig. A land sale in recent years has seen the layout reduced to twelve playable holes, though it retains its character and setting.
The present clubhouse, built in 1996, sits beside the first tee and offers a friendly welcome to members and visitors alike, with the club now operating as Cowal Golf and Lodge Resort Ltd. The course is accessed from Ardenslate Road, just a short ferry journey from Gourock on the mainland and about an hour from Glasgow city centre. Cowal sits close to the annual Cowal Highland Gathering and is well placed for combining golf with a wider Argyll itinerary.
