Golf Course Overview
Coventry Golf Club was formed in 1887 with an initial nine-hole layout on Whitley Common before moving to its present Finham Park home in 1911. The 18-hole parkland course was designed by Tom Vardon, with his legendary brother Harry marking out the bunkers, and was formally opened in 1912 with an exhibition match between Harry Vardon and James Braid. Further work was carried out by Frederick Hawtree in the 1970s after the Warwick bypass claimed two holes, and Martin Hawtree oversaw a full bunker reconstruction completed in 1998. Today the gently undulating, tree-lined layout measures 6,590 yards to a par of 73 across 120 acres, comprising five par fives, nine par fours and four par threes.
The club was the first in England to achieve the Golf Environment Organisation eco-label and has been a long-standing host of top-level golf, staging the Piccadilly Medal on the European Tour in the 1970s and serving as an R&A Open Championship Regional Qualifying venue from 2008 to 2012. Facilities include a well-stocked bar, restaurant, snooker room and pro shop. Visitors are welcomed on weekdays by prior arrangement and the course is easily accessed from the A45 and A46 just south of Coventry city centre.
