Golf Course Overview
Coombe Wood Golf Club was founded in 1904 and occupies a hidden position on a private estate in Kingston upon Thames, just nine miles from central London. The 18-hole parkland course plays to a par of 66 over approximately 5,285 yards, with the layout significantly updated in 1994 by Jonathan Gaunt and Steve Marnoch. The course straddles George Road, with the first ten holes on one side and the clubhouse and final eight on the other. This is a tight and quirky layout with tree-lined fairways, overlapping holes cleverly arranged, superbly maintained greens and bunkers, and a couple of near-blind tee shots on the 8th and 9th. The 16th-century Gallows Tamkin conduit, originally part of the fresh water supply for Hampton Court Palace, still stands between the 13th and 18th fairways.
The club welcomes both members and visitors, with a friendly pro shop, comfortable clubhouse bar and dining facilities. It is an ideal venue for iron-play practice given the premium placed on accuracy over distance. Coombe Wood sits adjacent to Coombe Hill and is close to Royal Wimbledon, with easy access from the A3 and mainline stations at Kingston and Wimbledon.
