Golf Course Overview
Cockermouth Golf Club was founded in 1896 and the course at Embleton was designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid. The 18-hole moorland layout plays to around 5,415 yards with a par of 69, a course rating of 67.1 and slope of 119. Despite its modest length the course is a genuine test, using hillside terrain, quirky elevation changes and the trademark Braid routing to produce memorable holes — the 10th and 16th in particular stand out, and the unusual grass bunkers give the course real character. Panoramic views take in the northern Lakeland fells and Derwentwater.
Facilities include a putting green, practice bunker, changing rooms, clubhouse bar and catering, with a well-regarded welcome for visiting societies and individual green-fee players. The club is a signatory of the R&A Women in Golf Charter and runs an active programme of internal competitions, opens and social events. The course sits above the village of Embleton on high ground between Cockermouth and Keswick, off the A66, with the Highfield webcam providing a live view across Derwentwater toward Borrowdale.
