Golf Course Overview

Chingford Golf Course is an 18-hole parkland/forest course on common land on the edge of Epping Forest, widely regarded as the oldest course in Essex. Its origins trace back to 1888 as the home course of Royal Epping Forest Golf Club, and the layout was substantially revised by the legendary James Braid with Willie Dunn Jnr. The course plays to a par of 72 at 6,342 yards with a rating of 70.1, laid out as two returning loops. The front nine is relatively flat, open and compact, while the back nine uses a small hill to provide a more strategic, tree-lined finish. Bunkers are deliberately limited and set away from public view to preserve the natural appearance of the common.

The course has been managed by the City of London Corporation for more than 120 years, and is shared by three member clubs — Chingford Golf Club, Chingford Ladies' Golf Club and Royal Epping Forest. A café, golf shop and free parking are available at the Bury Road entrance. The course is within a short walk of Chingford station on the London Overground from Liverpool Street, and is served by several North and East London bus routes. Walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders also use the common, so alertness is required.
