Golf Course Overview
Chelmsford Golf Club was founded in 1893, making it one of the county's oldest private members' clubs, and celebrated its centenary in 1993. Five-time Open Champion James Braid laid out the 18-hole course at Widford in 1910 after the club relocated from Galleywood, and the noted architect Harry Colt later expanded and re-designed the layout. The parkland course plays to a par of 68 at around 5,892 yards, with a course rating of 69.3 and a slope of 122, favouring accurate iron play and placement over raw distance.
The clubhouse offers a bar, restaurant and kitchen with views over the course, alongside a pro shop, practice areas and first-class administration. Chelmsford welcomes visitors, societies and corporate days, and the club captures significant Essex Golf Union silverware including the John Day Trophy in 2024. Located on Widford Road near the A12 and A414 and within 12 miles of the M25, the course enjoys a countryside setting at the centre of the county.
