 Golf Course Overview

Castlerock Golf Club was founded in April 1901 on the Causeway Coast of County Londonderry, close to the mouth of the River Bann. The original nine holes were expanded to a full 18 in 1908 by Ben Sayers, the noted Scottish professional and clubmaker from North Berwick, with later refinements by Harry Colt and a comprehensive restoration carried out by Dr Martin Hawtree across the winters of 2017 and 2019. The championship Mussenden Links plays to a par of 73 over approximately 6,805 yards, routed through towering dunes with dramatic views across the river, out to the Atlantic and on clear days towards Donegal and the Scottish island of Islay. The signature fourth hole, a 200-yard par-3 known as Leg o' Mutton, demands a tee shot threaded between a railway line on the right and the Bann Burn on the left to reach an elevated green. The club also maintains the shorter nine-hole Bann Course, whose par-5 fifth is widely regarded as one of the most scenic holes in Irish golf.

The clubhouse offers a bar, restaurant and pro shop, and the club operates an extensive caddie programme alongside practice facilities. Castlerock welcomes visitors seven days a week with restrictions applying at weekends, and a handicap certificate is required for the Mussenden Links. It is one of the four host clubs of the Causeway Coast Amateur Tournament and sits roughly 20 minutes by car from both Royal Portrush and Portstewart, making it a natural addition to any Causeway Coast golf itinerary.
