 Golf Course Overview

Castle Eden Golf Club was originally formed shortly after the First World War as The Dene Golf Club by staff of Nimmo's brewery at Castle Eden, on land rented from the owner between the Sunderland-Stockton road and Castle Eden Dene. A six-hole layout designed by O. L. Rowntree was later extended to nine holes by Sir Henry Cotton, and the club opened to paying membership in 1922, joining the Durham County Golf Union that same year. The present 18-hole parkland course, also planned by Sir Henry Cotton, plays to a par of 70 over roughly 6,000 yards from the yellow tees and features four par 3s and two par 5s, with the signature hole the testing par-3 17th.

The spacious clubhouse offers a full-length conservatory overlooking the 7th, 8th and 18th holes, a bar, restaurant with Sunday carvery and a full-size snooker table, and the club welcomes visitors, societies and corporate parties all year round. The 13th fairway is the site of a World War II memorial to RAF pilot Sgt R. G. W. Carter, killed when his Hurricane crashed here in 1942. The course sits just off the A19 on the B1281, opposite the Old Castle Eden Brewery, about a mile south of Peterlee.
