Golf Course Overview
Carnwath Golf Club was founded in 1907 on a piece of land called Gallow Hill to the west of Carnwath village, with the original 9-hole layout designed by Open champion Willie Auchterlonie. The course was extended to 18 holes in May 1922, with later input from G. M. Clark, and now plays to around 5,953 yards with a par of 70. The opening stretch is unusual in featuring three of the course's four par-3s within the first four holes, and the demanding stretch through the 5th to 8th — known locally as 'Amen Corner' — places a premium on accuracy as roads and a railway line come into play. The club crest depicts a silhouette of Carnwath Motte, a 12th-century lookout mound visible behind the first green.
The clubhouse is family-friendly with great-value food and drink, the pro shop is run by PGA professional James Walkinshaw, and the club hosts a range of well-regarded open competitions for gents, ladies and seniors. Visitors are welcome year-round without a handicap certificate. Carnwath sits on the A70 around eight miles north-east of Lanark.
