 Golf Course Overview

Carnoustie Golf Links is a legendary links venue where golf has been played since at least the 16th century. The Championship Course, originally laid out as a 10-hole course by Allan Robertson with Old Tom Morris in 1842 and extended to 18 by Old Tom in 1867, was significantly remodelled by James Braid in 1926 to bring it to Open Championship standard; it now measures about 6,945 yards to a par of 72. Known as "Car-nasty" for its difficulty, the Championship Course has hosted eight Open Championships (most recently in 2018, won by Francesco Molinari), two Women's Open Championships and three Senior Opens, and was voted the World's Best Golf Course at the 2019 World Golf Awards. The complex also includes the Burnside Course (par 68, 5,943 yards, redesigned by Mackenzie & Ebert) and the shorter Buddon Course (added 1980), plus the free five-hole Nestie.

Facilities at Links House include the Rookery Restaurant and Bar, a large professional shop, locker rooms and a seven-bay state-of-the-art golf simulator centre. The site is one of three venues (with Kingsbarns and the Old Course at St Andrews) used for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship each autumn. Visitors must book in advance via the Carnoustie Golf Links website, and stay-and-play packages are available at the on-site hotel. Located off the A92 south of Arbroath, the course is reached via Links Parade with the town's railway station a short walk away.

Golf Empire Verdict

Carnoustie Golf Links

★★★★ ★
4.7/5

"I recently took advantage of the 3-round ticket that the Carnoustie Golf Links offers. For the sum of £200 this entitled me to a round each on the three courses (Championship, Burnside & Buddon) that are all looked after by the management committee of this iconic Open venue."

The focal point of the trip was of course the main championship course, a testing links that has hosted The Open Championship on seven occasions and will do so again in 2018, however, as I was to discover the two supporting courses shouldn't be overlooked on a visit here either.
