 Golf Course Overview

Came Down Golf Club was founded in 1896 as the Dorchester Golf Club, making it one of the oldest in the county. The original 9-hole layout was designed by Tom Dunn and extended to 18 holes by five-time Open champion J.H. Taylor in 1904, prompting a rename to the Dorchester, Weymouth and County Golf Club. Harry Colt was engaged to remodel the course in 1924 and his work, completed in 1927, gave Came Down much of the character that survives today. The downland layout sits on chalk high ground between Dorchester and Weymouth, offering 360-degree views and featuring generous fairways but fast, sloping greens; the par-3 12th, built into the natural hillside with carefully placed bunkers, is regarded as a classic example of Colt's risk-and-reward design philosophy.

The club has significant historical links to the wider game, including connections to the R&A, the Ryder Cup and the origin of the term "bogey" through its 1910 captain Dr Thomas Browne. A recently refurbished clubhouse accommodates society, charity and corporate golf days, with a bar, restaurant and terrace looking out over the course. Came Down is easily reached from the A35, with both Dorchester and Weymouth served by direct rail links from London and Bristol.
