 Golf Course Overview

Brecon Golf Club was founded in 1902 and became the tenth club to join the Welsh Golfing Union, with the original layout attributed to the celebrated five-time Open champion and prolific course architect James Braid. The course sits on the banks of the River Usk on the edge of the town of Brecon, with the Brecon Beacons forming a dramatic backdrop. It is a nine-hole parkland layout played twice to make a full round measuring around 6,068 yards to a par of 70, with excellent drainage and flat, easy-walking terrain belying the challenge the course presents. Mature trees and established hedgerows shape many of the holes and come firmly into play when in full leaf, while the final four holes in each circuit are widely regarded as the toughest stretch, demanding accuracy rather than distance given the narrow fairways and small, well-defended greens.

The well-equipped clubhouse offers a warm welcome with bar, catering and comfortable lounge facilities for members and visitors alike. Visitors are welcomed six days a week, with Sundays generally reserved for members; no handicap certificate is required but etiquette is expected, and golf clubs and trolleys can be borrowed free of charge. Society bookings are catered for by arrangement. The course is situated about half a mile west of Brecon town centre at Newton Park in Llanfaes, with easy access from the A40, making it a convenient stop for golfers exploring mid and south Wales or visiting the Brecon Beacons National Park.
