Golf Course Overview
Bovey Castle's golf course was designed in 1926 by the noted British architect J.F. Abercromby and was originally intended to rival the courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry. The 18-hole parkland layout plays to a par of 70 and stretches to around 6,299 yards from the white tees, with a course rating of 71.1 and slope of 133. The front nine, played across the hotel estate within Dartmoor National Park, produces some of the most memorable holes, including a short risk-reward downhill opener, an exhilarating par 3 third played through a narrow avenue of trees to a near-island green, and a demanding par-4 seventh where the River Bovey comes into play twice. Mature trees, undulating fairways and the meandering river give the course its distinctive character.
The course forms part of a five-red-star hotel resort that also includes two restaurants, a spa, lodges and leisure facilities. Visitor golf, societies, golf breaks and corporate days are all offered, together with tuition from the resident professional team and a modern driving range. Bovey Castle sits on the B3212 near North Bovey, roughly 45 minutes from Exeter International Airport and 40 minutes from Exeter St Davids station, and is accessed via A30 junction 31 at Whiddon Down followed by the A382 through Moretonhampstead.

Golf Empire Verdict
Bovey Castle
"Stood on the fourth tee at Bovey Castle I’m already three golf balls down, having not found any of my tee-shots, and am hobbling like an old man thanks to a pain in my foot."
I should be ready for quitting this godforsaken game and heading to the luxuries on offer at the accompanying 5-star country house hotel... yet I’m fascinated by these opening holes and am keen to see the rest..
