 Golf Course Overview

Bishop Auckland Golf Club was established in 1894 and lies in parkland surrounding the Bishops Palace and the River Wear at High Plains, on the outskirts of the town. The course has a remarkable heritage: James Braid and Harry Vardon played here as early as 1906, and US Open champion John Daly, Sir Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer have all teed it up at the club. A comprehensive redesign by Mark Kerr and Jonathan Gaunt was completed in 2014, and the present 18-hole parkland layout plays to a par of 72 over approximately 6,460 yards, with rolling hills, varied holes and some secluded par-3 "dingles" providing a stern test for all abilities.

The club provides a clubhouse with bar and dining, a pro shop, practice facilities and professional coaching, and welcomes visitors, societies and corporate groups. Bishop Auckland regularly hosts county-level and open events and has produced England international players. Set in the Wear Valley with sweeping views over Auckland Castle and the surrounding countryside, it is signposted from Durham Road (A688) on the edge of Bishop Auckland.
